Reflection

At the start of the project, I instantly knew I wanted to do something surrounding clothing waste. I myself have the habit of buying clothes I do not need, and end up donating a lot of items that I have barely even worn. I felt that this was the right idea because it was both personal and easy to advocate for. Small changes in our consuming habits could make a dramatic impact on reducing textile waste and the climate crisis as a whole. As the week went on, I began storyboarding different ideas. I knew I wanted to make an animation, particularly something stylish and lighthearted. I don't like when such serious topics are shoved down your throat in a preachy way. We are all aware of the horrors that come from the climate crisis, and another dooms day announcement doesn't spark the action we need. I decided to work on a story about a young girl who falls for trends. By choosing to be herself, she buys less clothes and takes care of what she owns, reducing textile waste and her self esteem. I was excited about this idea because it had heart and directly addressed the issues at hand.

The next week was dedicated to animating. I had already used procreate before, and decided to use it again for this project for the sake of familiarity. I struggled with time management this week, for I was applying for jobs, working on the essay, and animating. I love the processes of hand drawn animation, but it does become time consuming and tedious. Even with my time management issues, I was very happy with the development of my animation. I loved the cartoon style I used and even incorporated photography. I decided to take pictures of clothing in my own closet, and used the fabric textures to color the hats. I am very pleased by how this experiment turned out, for it gave my digital animation a more handmade feel.

During the final days of the project, I edited and added sound to my animation. I had never done this before, and enlisted the help of my friend. He showed me some basic functions on Premier Pro, as well as a few free sound effect archives. Applying what I learned from him, I edited the pacing of my animation and added sound effects. I feel I may have gone too far with the sound, but the obnoxiousness of it all gives the animation a lighthearted and childlike tone. I am pleased with the overall outcome of my animation and feel that is a good call to action for people of all ages to step up and fight the climate crisis.
